Description from the seller

Vintage chrismatory, France 1750, a very rare piece used within the Roman Catholic Church. The chrismatory is a rectangular box with a pyramidal lid, made of pewter, containing 3 containers with chrism oils, that is, holy oils to be used: the first for baptism and confirmation, the second for ordination, and the third for the anointing of the dying, meaning those who are about to die, anointing also called 'extrema unctio' (last anointing) in Latin. The box is 12.5 cm in height and 10 cm in width, weighing 785 grams. On the bottom of the box, there are two marks: one with 3 lilies and the other with the craftsman's mark, which also certifies the year the box was made, in this case, a crown with the initials P and C underneath, meaning Pierre Clopritre.
