The name Franc was used from 1360 to 1740 for French coins. Between 1795 and 1999, the Franc was the official currency of France. The first issue of this coin featured a portrait of Napoleon I, and between 1853 and 1870, it was Napoleon III. The obverse shows the French Emperor Napoleon III without a crown. The reverse displays the year of issue and the nominal value of the coin, surrounded by a laurel wreath. Starting in 1899, the reverse of the 20 Franc coin featured the rooster.
On the offered coin from 1857, the French emperor Napoleon III is visible without a wreath. On the reverse side, the year of issue, the nominal value of the coin surrounded by a laurel wreath, and the coin mint Paris, indicated with the letter A, are depicted.
