Description from the seller
This refined object in chased silver represents a typical example of a portable devotional triptych inspired by Byzantine or Russian art, probably dating from the 20th century. Crafted with great skill, it features a three-panel folding structure with embossed sacred scenes depicting episodes from the lives of Christ and the saints, finely outlined and rich in iconographic details. The figures, characterized by incised halos and solemn postures, clearly reflect the influence of Orthodox sacred art, where spiritual hierarchy and mystical intensity are expressed through the depth of the relief and the symmetry of the composition.
The object, probably intended for private devotion by a devotee or a traveler, stands out for its craftsmanship quality and the purity of the decorative lines framing the main scenes, with floral and geometric motifs reminiscent of the aesthetic of Russian metal icons or travel reliquaries from Eastern Europe. The silver patina, slightly darkened by time, accentuates the volumes and gives the piece an authentic and spiritual charm.
Objects of similar craftsmanship were common among pilgrims and members of the clergy in the 19th century, often kept in small wooden or velvet cases and used as tools for personal prayer. This specimen, thanks to the fineness of its chasing and the vivid storytelling of its sacred scenes, ranks among the highest quality artifacts, worthy of being part of a sacred art collection or an exhibition dedicated to the religious metallurgy of the period.
