Body: Konica Auto S
Released in 1963, the Konica Auto S is one of the most important Japanese rangefinders of the early 1960s being a beautifully engineered, all-metal camera that set the foundation for the celebrated Auto S series. It is best known for bringing true shutter-priority automatic exposure into a premium 35mm rangefinder body, at a time when most cameras were still fully manual or relied on selenium cells.
The Auto S features a coupled CdS metering system powered by a PX675 cell, allowing it to automatically choose the correct aperture for any shutter speed you set. This early form of semi-automatic exposure was incredibly advanced for 1963 and helped establish Konica as a leader in metered rangefinder design.
Meter Type: CdS, shutter-priority auto exposure
Shutter: Seikosha leaf shutter
Speeds: 1/500 s – 1 s + Bulb
Exposure Modes: Full manual + auto
Viewfinder: Bright coupled rangefinder with projected frames
Film Advance: Single-stroke lever
Flash Sync: Full sync at all speeds — advantage of the leaf shutter
Lens Mount: Fixed lens with internal shutter
The build quality is substantial, with a dense, well-machined body that feels closer to a professional tool than a consumer camera. The shutter is nearly silent, the rangefinder patch is clear and contrasty, and the winding mechanism is exceptionally smooth — typical of Konica’s early mechanical excellence.
Collectors appreciate the Auto S for its reliability, its pioneering exposure automation, and its striking mid-century industrial design.
Lens: Hexanon 47mm f/1.9
The heart of the Konica Auto S is its exceptional Hexanon 47mm f/1.9 — a fast, six-element lens that quickly gained a reputation for Leica-like sharpness and tonal richness. This lens, and the Hexanon name itself, helped cement Konica’s status as one of Japan’s finest optical manufacturers.
Focal Length: 47mm
Maximum Aperture: f/1.9
Optical Construction: 6 elements in 4 groups
Coating: Early Konica anti-flare coating (deep amber reflections)
Minimum Focus Distance: 1 m
Aperture Range: f/1.9 – f/16
Optically, the Hexanon 47/1.9 delivers:
High microcontrast and crisp detail
Beautifully smooth falloff toward the background
Excellent color reproduction
A gentle, classic bokeh signature typical of early-1960s Japanese design
Stopped down to f/4–f/8 it becomes impressively sharp, with elegant tonality ideal for both color and black-and-white photography.
Condition
The lens glass is clean and clear, free of haze or fungus, with only minor dust typical for its age. The focusing ring is smooth, the aperture blades are clean, and the shutter speeds fire correctly.
The camera body is in excellent mechanical condition, with a bright viewfinder and smooth film advance.
Photographed in natural light to show the clarity of the optics and the preserved finish of the body.
I feel it's time to find her a new home with someone that can take care of her and put her to good use.
The shipping will be done by courier, with the best protective packaging, insurance and a tracking code, as I would do for myself.
Thank you.
Happy holidays and happy treasure hunting!
