Description from the seller
Bronze Chariot Axle Ornament Decorated with Taotie Mask Pattern
Warring States Period
Diameter 6.2 cm | Height 6.7 cm (excluding stand)
This finely cast bronze chariot axle ornament is encircled with intricate taotie mask motifs rendered in crisp relief. The sinuous scrolls and interlocking curls exhibit refined symmetry and a precise casting technique. The surface bears a natural patina of deep brown and malachite-green tones, the result of centuries of burial, exuding an ancient and dignified character.
Such axle fittings were essential components of aristocratic chariots during the Warring States period, symbolizing rank and authority. The design, with its elaborate taotie pattern and delicate spiral infill, is closely related to late Warring States bronzes of the Chu cultural sphere. While most known examples of chariot axles are plain or simply decorated, those adorned with taotie masks are exceptionally rare, suggesting this piece may have originated from a high-ranking or royal burial. It stands as a significant testament to the sophistication of Warring States bronze craftsmanship and the ceremonial splendor of noble chariotry.
