Description from the seller
Impressive Spanish reliquary of the Virgen del Rocío, dating from the first half of the 20th century. Crafted in silver-plated bas-relief metal, this piece reflects the enduring Sevillian baroque style, with its exuberant volutes, floral motifs, and symmetrical structure. The central relic is encased under glass and mounted on a vivid red background, surrounded by decorative sequins.
The relic bears a label reading 'Virgen del Rocío,' referencing the famed Marian devotion centered in Almonte, Andalusia. The Virgin of El Rocío is one of Spain’s most beloved religious icons, with centuries of pilgrimage tradition known as the 'Romería del Rocío,' celebrated annually and drawing millions of faithful.
The backside features a secondary red cloth panel framed in a starburst shape, often indicative of ceremonial display in religious festivals. This piece would have been used for private veneration or as part of a home altar in southern Spain.
Measurements:
21 cm x 17 cm
Condition
Good vintage condition. Signs of age and oxidation consistent with use. The relic, sequins, and glass are intact. Rich natural patina enhances the relief detailing.
