Ferdinando Scianna, a member of the Magnum agency, has accompanied for over two years the patients coming from Italy on a pilgrimage to Lourdes within the framework of UNITALSI (Unione Nazionale Italiana Trasporti Ammalati a Lourdes e Santuari Internazionali). Each year, 250 trains complete this journey, accompanied by volunteers. One of these trains transported 270 sick children for a first stop at Eurodisney, a few kilometers from Paris, to offer these children, besides the hope of a miracle, entertainment characteristic of 'normal' childhood.
Ferdiando Scianna was born in 1943 in Bagheria near Palermo in Sicily. He began photographing his native Sicily at a very young age, and after studying philosophy and art history, he immediately published a book titled 'Feste Religiose in Sicilia,' where his photographs were accompanied by text from the renowned writer Leonardo Sciascia. This book was an immediate success and is recognized as an important photographic work; it is referenced in Photobook by Parr & Badger (volume 3, page 111).
In 1967, Ferdinando Scianna settled in Milan, then began working for the weekly magazine L'Europeo as a photographer and journalist, and he became the correspondent in Paris for this magazine in the 1970s. During those Parisian years, Ferdinando Scianna became friends with Henri Cartier-Bresson and in 1982 joined the agency Magnum Photos. Chance also turned him into a fashion photographer for Dolce & Gabbana, and the book Marpessa, which emerged from this first experience, is now highly sought after. Throughout these years, Ferdinando Scianna traveled extensively around the world as a journalist and later as an internationally recognized photographer, but his photographic work always remained faithful to Sicily, which he photographed relentlessly.
Book from my personal collection, in excellent condition (like new), carefully preserved. Shipping is very securely protected and international postal tracking is guaranteed. In case of multiple purchases, combined shipping is possible with a refund of any excess postal fees paid via Paypal.
