Italo Zannier (born in 1932), Giuseppe Zigaina (1924–2015), and Pier Paolo Pasolini, a renowned poet and filmmaker (1922–1975), share their native region of Friuli in the far east of northern Italy. Italo Zannier's photographs clearly reflect this common belonging to the landscapes of Friuli. Furthermore, a strong friendship connected the painter and the poet, as they knew each other very early; the painter illustrated one of the poet's first books, and later, the poet dedicated a poem to the painter.
Zigaina, born in 1924 in Friuli, met Pier Paolo Pasolini immediately after the Second World War and established a strong bond of friendship, shared ideals, and passion with him, illustrating one of the poet's early books. Zigaina was part of the Italian realist painting movement, particularly alongside Renato Guttuso, and some of his paintings are engaged works, such as 'The Land Occupation.' He was invited several times to the prestigious Venice Biennale, including a major solo exhibition in 1966.
