Coiffe Chi wara, a Bamabara wooden cimier from Mali, dating to the late 20th century, 67 cm high and 20 cm wide, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
The Ciwara is composed of the Bamanan words Ci=Work and Wara=lion. The carved Ciwara is not a mask but a crest, held at the top of the head with a small reed hat. Among the Bamanan, after several initiation stages, the Ciwara rewards the greatest workers in all areas of active life. Representing the legendary antelope of the Bambara, the Ciwara is thus a symbol of courage, self-sacrifice, and wisdom. Like the chimera, the dragon, the siren, or the Medusa, the Ciwara has become a contagious theme, an exuberant symbol that is part of the lives of all curious Africans. The carved, engraved, and patinated wooden Ciwara have brought worldwide fame to Bamanan art from Mali, celebrating the mythical union between the sun and the earth, and inspiring young farmers to work diligently.
