Description from the seller
God Amon-Ra / Amun-Ra
Bronze
Ancient Egypt, Late Period, 664 – 332 BC
26 cm height with stand, 24 cm height without stand.
Condition: Very good, rejoined legs, crown restored, see photos.
Provenance: Private collection, C., Marseille, 1970.
Amon-Ra was one of the most important deities in Ancient Egypt, the result of the fusion of two gods: Amon, god of the air and the occult, and Ra, god of the sun and creator of the universe. This union represented both the invisible power of the wind and the visible energy of the sun, making Amun-Ra the supreme god of the Egyptian pantheon, especially during the New Kingdom (approximately between 1550 and 1070 BC).
As the creator god and source of all life, Amun-Ra was revered as the father of the gods, protector of the pharaoh, and sustainer of the cosmic order. He was considered omnipresent and omnipotent, which made him comparable to concepts of a single deity in other ancient cultures. His main center of worship was in Thebes, in the great temple of Karnak, one of the most impressive religious complexes of antiquity.
Amon-Ra was usually depicted as a man with a crown of tall feathers or with the head of a falcon crowned by a solar disc. His cult was so influential that many pharaohs proclaimed him as the one and only universal god. Devotion to Amon-Ra symbolized the union between heaven and earth, the hidden and the visible, the divine and the human.
