Description from the seller

Demetrius II Nikator, Second Reign (129–125 BC)
Seleucid Empire. AR Tetradrachm. Tyre mint.

Dated Seleucid Era 186 (127/6 BC).

13.64 g / 27 mm. SC 2195.4b variant.

Obv: Diademed and draped bust of Demetrius II right, seen from front.

Rev: Eagle standing left on prow, palm branch over wing, monograms in fields.

Historical Context:

Demetrius II Nikator’s turbulent reign reflects the final century of Seleucid decline. After being captured by the Parthians during his first reign, he returned to the throne in 129 BC but inherited a weakened and fragmented kingdom. His second reign was marked by political instability, territorial losses, and the growing dominance of regional powers.

The Tyre mint tetradrachms issued under his authority emphasize continuity and legitimacy during a period of crisis. The eagle on prow—long associated with Seleucid naval imagery—symbolizes strength and dynastic identity, while the palm branch evokes divine favor and victory. Despite these messages, Demetrius II was unable to reverse the empire’s collapse, and the Seleucid state continued to diminish rapidly after his death.
