Description from the seller

Pair of sculptures depicting Krishna and Radha - Wood - India, second half of the 20th century

Refined Coromandel wood sculpture depicting the divine couple Radha and Krishna, whose spiritual love represents one of the foundations of Hindu mythology.

This piece is an excellent example of traditional Indian craftsmanship.

The Divine Couple
Krishna, the god of love, wisdom, and music, is here depicted with his characteristic bell-shaped headdress (makara-mukuta), a symbol of his divine nature.

Next to him, Radha embodies pure devotion (prema bhakti) and shakti—the divine feminine power.

In Hindu theology, Radha is not merely Krishna's earthly lover but his eternal consort, representing the feminine aspect of the divine.

Their union symbolizes the immortal spiritual love that transcends time and physical form, offering a profound insight into Indian spiritual culture.

The engraving is executed with remarkable craftsmanship.

The sculpture displays a rich tonal variety in the wood, with the contrast between the natural wood and the darkened areas creating depth and dynamism. The details are carefully delineated: the garments, the ornaments, the regal bearing of the figures.

The weight of 1,900 grams confirms the craftsmanship's solidity and the quality of the wood used, consistent with the use of Coromandel wood, known for its durability and superior carving properties.

Data from the second half of the 20th century (presumably 1950-1970), this sculpture represents the period of cultural renaissance in India following independence, when the rediscovery of traditional craftsmanship became a priority.

Manual work demonstrates the influence of the rich Indian sculpture tradition, combining iconographic accuracy with artistic expressiveness.

The sculpture is in good condition, with the natural patina of time attesting to its authenticity.

It does not present significant fractures, but has small cracks in the wood due to the wood itself and appears to be plastered, still in India. These do not cause any problems for reading the sculptural work.

This pair of deities represents a piece of value both spiritually and artistically, suitable for collectors of Eastern art, enthusiasts of Hindu mythology, and decorators who appreciate authentic traditional craftsmanship.

Dimensions: 42 cm × 19 cm × 8 cm Weight: 1,900 g. Material: Coromandel wood; The 'Coromandel wood' is the commercial name for rosewood, a precious and rare wood originating from India.
