Collection of 21 fans from Indonesia, China and Italy, dating to the 1950s–1960s and the 1990s–2000s, with sizes ranging from 13 cm to 76 cm (closed), made of wood, fabric, leather, paper and bamboo, in good to very good condition with some age-related marks.
Description from the seller
A beautiful collection of 21 fans, varying in size, style, type, and origin.
The fans come from Indonesia (Java, Shadow Puppet Theater), China, Japan (large wall fan), Italy (Sardinian fan).
The materials are wood, fabrics, paper, leather, bamboo, and others.
The period spans from the mid-20th century to the early 2000s.
The largest fan measures 76 cm (closed).
The smallest (the Sardinian one) measures 13 cm.
The general conditions are good and very good (some are like new). The wall fan features some cuts in the leaf that do not compromise its opening or the overall beauty. Each fan is documented in the Gallery to allow for personal evaluation.
Happy bidding.
A few notes on the collection
The Indonesian fan (from Java) dates back to the mid-20th century and is made of buffalo leather, hand-decorated with Wayang figures from shadow puppet theater. The sticks are made of metal.
The largest (over one meter in opening) is a Japanese wall fan featuring flying birds, bamboo plants, and flowers on a gold background. The sticks are made of lacquered wood.
- The Chinese round-frame fans, a modern reinterpretation of the well-known imperial 'ping shan' (平扇) fans, are embroidered on fine fabric with floral elements and feature a tassel at the end of the handle, a distinctive element of ceremonial and performance fans (theatre, dance).
The Sardinian fan is made of printed fabric, bordered in black lace, with plastic sticks featuring gold details. Folkloric narrative style.
Several decorative oriental fans are presented, featuring symbolic iconography: the peacock, the panda in a bamboo forest, and flying birds.
