Fossil vertebra of Mammuthus primigenius (wooley mammoth) from the North Sea, Late Pleistocene, natural condition, 19 cm high, 26 cm wide, 8 cm thick, one item.
Description from the seller
Fossil mammoth vertebra - Mammuthus primigenius
Very beautiful and heavy vertebra, this is a smaller size, so I assume it must have come from a young mammoth.
First cervical vertebra (atlas) of a woolly mammoth.
All mammals have seven neck vertebrae. The neck vertebrae of mammoths are quite flat. A short neck with strong muscles was necessary to support the skull with enormous tusks.
The two posterior condyles of the skull fit into the cup-shaped articular surfaces. This allows for a nodding movement (nodding yes).
This Wervel has been descaled and is still in clean water; everyone has their own way of preserving it. I will gladly leave that to the next owner, including any additional cleaning if necessary.
Doggerland no longer exists, but traces of it can still be found on the beaches of the North Sea. It is not uncommon for walkers, enthusiasts, and researchers to find something special there.
Remarkable treasures such as a mammoth tusk. Bones are also brought to the surface from sandbanks and fishing nets, including this one early 2025.
