Art Deco butter dish with a domed, sapphire blue pressed glass cover, attributed to Josef Inwald A.G. from Czechoslovakia circa 1930–1935; height 11 cm, length 21.5 cm, width 16 cm.
Description from the seller
Art deco butter dish with bamboo motif in sapphire blue pressed glass, attributed to Josef Inwald, circa 1930.
The object rests on a rectangular base with rounded corners. The underside features a detailed flange edge with a fine pearl border, which contrasts with the smooth bottom.
The removable dome features a striking high-relief decoration of broad, vertical flutes, stylistically referencing a stylized bamboo motif. The dome is topped with a solid, geometrically stepped handle. The deep sapphire blue coloration varies in intensity depending on the light, which is characteristic of the high-quality metal oxide recipes of the Bohemian glass industry from the interwar period.
This object is a characteristic example of Czechoslovakian art deco from the 1930s. Although subtle, the specific form features strongly point towards Josef Inwald A.G., one of the leading glass producers in Teplice.
The attribution is based on three pillars. First, the grip: the stepped, block-shaped handle is a signature element that Inwald frequently used in tableware lines such as the Lord model and various jardinieres from the 1930s. This contrasts with the typically rounder or floral-shaped handles of German competitors. Second, the weight: at over 1.3 kg, this object exceeds the standard quality of the average pressed glass. Third, the color: the specific sapphire blue hue was a specialty of Bohemian glass furnaces and was often exported to the English market.
Condition report
In overall very good condition. The glass is clear and has a strong reflection. No chips observed on the edges of the dome or the dish. No internal hairline cracks or glass disease. Minimal scratching on the stand ring at the bottom, consistent with age and use.
