Description from the seller
The icon you show is the Virgin of the Burning Thornbush.
('Neopalímaya Kupiná' – Neopalímaya Kupiná, literally 'The Burning Bush that does not burn up').
He is a very particular and symbolic figure within Russian iconography, based on the burning bush from the Exodus (3:2), an image of the Virgin who conceives without 'burning up'.
The icon has all the characteristic elements:
Two superimposed diamonds (one red and one green/black with stars)
Red rhombus symbolizes the fire of the burning bush.
Dark green/black diamond with stars → symbolizes divine mystery, the presence of God, the 'luminous darkness' of Orthodox theology.
In the center appears the Theotokos with the Child Christ.
Eight angels at the extremes
They represent
The four living creatures of Ezekiel's vision (man, lion, ox, and eagle).
And the four winds or 'Celestial Armies'.
They are distributed within the tips of the diamonds, just like in your icon.
Inscription at the top
In ecclesiastical Slavic, the title appears clearly.
The Burning Bush that does not burn
Typically Russian composition (17th–19th centuries)
The style, intense colors, and iconographic scheme are characteristic of Russian workshops.
Spiritual significance
The Virgin is compared to the burning bush of Moses.
It burns but is not consumed, like María's conception without corruption.
Christ appears as a 'divine fire' that illuminates but does not destroy.
The angels display the presence of the celestial world around the mystery.
In Russia, this icon also serves as protection against fires and domestic disasters.
An authenticity certificate endorsed by the Ministry of Culture of Estonia is provided.
