Description from the seller
This set of two ''Vimini'' baskets by Alessi combines traditional inspiration with contemporary craftsmanship. Designed by Michel Boucquillon and Donia Maaoui, these Vimini baskets draw on the charm of classic woven wicker baskets, yet reinterprets it in metal with a sophisticated, original approach.
Each basket begins as a sheet of steel, which is cut with precision using lasers and then moulded through a series of carefully controlled mechanical processes. The final result is a piece that reflects both the skill of Alessi’s workshops and the elegance of handcrafted forms. As Michel Boucquillon recalls, “When we went fig-picking in Provence with my mother, we were always accompanied by her wicker basket, so practical, elegant, and authentic. Its open shell shape provided space for the figs, ensuring even the ripest ones remained intact. The idea was to translate the nobility of this handcrafted basket into metal with the new decoration of the VIMINI collection for Alessi.”
These ''Vimini'' baskets are versatile and poetic. Their open, curved shape makes them perfect for presenting day-to-day dishes with style, while also functioning beautifully as desktop organisers, bathroom containers, or elegant storage anywhere in the home. Beyond functionality, their shape adds a poetic and suggestive touch that enlivens any corner of a room or office.
Made in Italy at Alessi’s Crusinallo di Omegna factory, this set of two baskets is ideal for anyone who appreciates design that merges elegance, practicality, and a sense of story.
About the name:
The name “Vimini” is directly inspired by the Italian word “vimini,” which refers to wicker or wickerwork, the traditional craft of weaving slender branches or stems into baskets and other objects.
These ''Vimini '' baskets are in a new and unused condition. Delivered with original packaging.
Michel Boucquillon & Donia Maaoui:
Born in Belgium in 1962. In 1988 he won the competition of the chamber of European Parliament in Brussels which signed the beginning of his Architectural and Design career. Designed by Michel Boucquillon and Donia Maaoui, the “Bark” collection was inaugurated in 2015. The designers drew their inspiration from their home, Casa Boucquillon: it is a place for experimentation, meditation and work where they can live in synch with nature. The perforated pattern of the “Bark” range recalls the bark on the trees that surround the house. Michel actually works for the world most famous International Design companies: Alessi, Artemide, Antonio Lupi, Ferragamo, Serralunga. His work is present in several Museums and got many of the main international Awards, recently: Menzione d’Onore Compasso d’Oro 2011, Good Design Award 2008, Design Plus 2006. Donia Maaoui, Michel’s wife and an architect herself, works alongside her husband on some of the Alessi and Martinelliluce projects, although her principal occupation is cast bronze sculpture and painting.
