Description from the seller

A beautifully preserved natural sea sponge (Spongia officinalis)

This impressive specimen shows the characteristic soft, porous structure and warm beige colour typical of the so-called "Honeycomb" or "Wool sponge", traditionally harvested in the Mediterranean Sea.

These sponges were once collected by free divers and used since ancient Greek and Roman times for bathing, painting, and decoration. Today they are prized as natural interior pieces and marine curiosities.

Species: Spongia officinalis (Linnaeus, 1759)

Origin: Mediterranean Sea (Greece / Aegean region)

Period: Modern (20th century)

Material: natural marine sponge.

Condition:
Excellent overall condition. Fully natural specimen, clean and intact, with finely branched structure and original colour tone.

The dark carved wooden stand is NOT part of this lot.

Dimensions: 180 x 150 x 130 mm

A highly decorative natural marine object — ideal for collectors of sea curiosities, interior decorators, or as a conversation piece.

Will be carefully packaged and shipped with tracking.
