Description from the seller

Set of Ignorance is Bliss Porcelain Plates – Limited Edition

Ignorance Is Bliss is an ongoing project by Agne Kucerenkaite that transforms metal waste from water treatment plants, soil-remediation companies, and other industrial streams into refined, functional objects. The project highlights the environmental impact of metal mining, an extractive, non-renewable process and demonstrates how industrial byproducts can be reintroduced into the material cycle as valuable resources.

The colours of each piece are created exclusively using industrial metal waste, with up to 40% incorporated directly into the glaze. Every piece is handcrafted and fired in a reduction gas kiln, a traditional kiln atmosphere in which oxygen is intentionally limited. Reduction firing is rare in Europe due to strict environmental regulations and the high level of craftsmanship required, but it creates a depth and richness in colour that cannot be achieved in electric kilns. The atmosphere inside the kiln often produces natural variations and subtle irregularities, each firing is entirely unique.

All pieces are food-safe.

Both plates fall under the studio’s “Category B” selection, meaning they contain minor aesthetic irregularities while remaining fully functional and structurally sound.
Plate 1: Features a tiny air bubble on the rim within the porcelain body. This is a natural occurrence during forming and does not affect durability.
Plate 2: Has a slight bend along the edge with a microcrack sealed beneath the glaze.
This microcrack formed before firing and became fully vitrified in the reduction gas kiln. Such variations are characteristic of reduction firing and contribute to its unique, atmospheric results.

Dimensions:
Oval Plate 19cm x 11.5cm, h 3cm

Seller's Story

Ignorance is Bliss is a continuous design project founded by Agne Kucerenkaite. The research-based project utilises industrial waste and secondary materials and reuses them into interior and exterior products of higher value. Ignorance is Bliss is giving a new identity to waste and to the built environment, with empathy for planetary health. The Ignorance is Bliss foundations date back to 2016. At that time industrial metal waste from diverse sources was analysed and reclaimed as a pigment for ceramics, glass, and textiles, with a limited edition homeware collection as an outcome. All along, Ignorance is Bliss complexity grew into in-depth theoretical and material research of diverse waste leading to small and large-scale design applications. Ignorance is Bliss is an umbrella term for ongoing experimentation and disruptive cross-disciplinary thinking, which gradually develops into techniques and products.
