Description from the seller

Cartouche tile, vase with flowers and singing birds, woman with child, corner motif with quarter rose.
Rotterdam, circa 1730-1790

Antique rare tile from the Aalmis / Aelmis Factory, documented in literature.

An authentic antique tile, identified as a Rotterdam cartouche tile. This tile dates from the second half of the 18th century (ca. 1730-1790) and is a documented example of the production from the renowned Rotterdam tile industry.

The tile is painted in manganese color and features a central decoration within an ornate frame (cartouche). The scene includes a woman with a child in the cartouche, topped by an elegant vase with flowers and two singing birds.

The corner motifs are known as 'quarter rosettes,' and a subtle detail of a spider is incorporated.

This type of tile is extensively described in specialized literature and is attributed to the factory of Aalmis (also Aelmis) on Schiedamsedijk in Rotterdam.
In the book The Dutch Tile: Decors and Names 1570-1930 by Jan Pluis (p. 438), tiles with the same corner motif and similar decors are depicted.

In 'Tiles from Rotterdam 1609-1866' by Ingrid de Jager and Nora Schadee (p. 130), four tiles of this type are depicted in the collection of Museum Rotterdam and are also attributed to the Aalmis factory.

Under section 3.13 on the Tiles from Rotterdam website, you will find a tile with exactly the same decor, but in blue.

Dating: circa 1730 - 1790 (18th century)
Dimensions: 13 x 13 cm

Technique: Hand-painted on earthenware

The tile is in good condition, with signs of aging, small edge chips, and visible wear. See the photos.

The tile is carefully packaged and shipped registered with tracking information.
