Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a pioneering French painter, draftsman, and sculptor, best known as one of the leading figures of Fauvism, a movement that emphasized bold colors, strong lines, and expressive compositions. His work had a profound influence on 20th-century modern art, evolving from Impressionism to a unique style of abstraction rooted in harmony and emotional power.

Matisse's approach combined simplicity of form with a vibrant palette. Over time, he moved toward more decorative, flattened compositions, exploring balance between line and color. Later in life, his celebrated cut-outs 'gouaches découpées' became iconic.

Today, Matisse’s artworks command high prices in the art market. Several of his paintings have sold for tens of millions of dollars at auction, with Les coucous, tapis bleu et rose fetching over $45 million in 2009. His works are highly sought after by collectors, institutions, and museums worldwide.

One of his most celebrated works, La Desserte Rouge (also known as The Red Room, 1908), exemplifies his signature style. The piece depicts a dining room scene dominated by a deep red tablecloth that blends into the wallpaper, creating a nearly monochrome background from which flowers, fruits, and decorative motifs emerge. A woman arranges fruit on a table, her presence calm and absorbed. The scene is balanced by a view through the window, showing a stylized garden in cooler tones, providing contrast and depth. The composition merges domestic intimacy with abstract boldness and is often regarded as a masterpiece of early 20th-century color theory and design.
