Description from the seller
Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Ancient Roman solid bronze Legionary belt applique amulet in the shape of a stylised Eagle 'Aquila'. The figure is cast with outspread wings and a compact, schematic body. The head is rendered in simplified form, projecting forward, while the legs are separated below, creating a balanced and recognisable silhouette. The reverse is flat and fitted with a small central projection knob, clearly indicating its original function als an applied fitting, intended to be secured to a belt, chest, military equipment or a ceremonial object.
A compact and evocative Roman bronze fitting, combining symbolic power with a practical function.
Height: ± 19,2 mm
Width: ± 19,3 mm
Condition: good and solid condition. The surface displays a stable green patina with areas of darker encrustation. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
The eagle was a powerful symbol to the Roman military. With each Roman legion a special eagle-bearer (aquilifer) had the honour of carrying the Legionary Eagle standard into battle and to guard its existence.
The eagle was a symbol of the power and majesty of the Eternal City and was associated with Zeus (Roman Jupiter).
