Description from the seller
Byzantine double-bladed axe (labrys)
Byzantine Empire / Caucasus, 10th–11th centuries AD
Wrought iron
Description
Double-edged axe in forged iron, of the labrys type, with symmetrical curved blades and a gently outwardly swept edge. It features a central tubular eye for the handle, with lateral reinforcements, and a robust profile that indicates its functional use as a combat weapon.
This type of double axes is rare in the archaeological record but is well documented in iconographic sources and medieval manuscripts from the Byzantine and Caucasian spheres, where they are associated with both the armies of the Eastern Byzantine Empire and Armenian contingents.
It is mounted on a modern wooden display stand, custom-made, consisting of a stable base and a vertical shaft that is inserted into the central tubular eye, allowing for proper viewing without intervention or modification of the piece.
Historical context
During the 10th and 11th centuries, the Byzantine Empire maintained a complex military structure that integrated regular troops, mercenaries, and allied contingents from Armenia and the Caucasus. In this context, double-edged axes were used as light combat weapons, especially by infantry and light cavalry.
These weapons are depicted in illuminated manuscripts and medieval works of art, confirming their actual use beyond symbolic tradition. Some typological parallels show affinities with contemporary eastern weapons, such as certain cavalry axes used in the medieval Islamic world, reflecting the cultural and military exchange typical of the eastern Mediterranean.
