Description from the seller
Standard work with biography and catalog raisonné. Featuring over 3,000 illustrations and 94 plates in color. Bound with a dust jacket. Slight tear on the dust jacket, otherwise a very good copy.
Sent registered and insured.
Egon Schiele's works are expressionist and belong to the painting style of the Vienna Secession.
The drawings and paintings of Schiele are mainly images of people. To a limited extent, Schiele also painted cityscapes and landscapes. Due to his strong use of lines, Schiele can be seen more as a draftsman than as a painter. Color in the paintings is only applied afterwards, once the drawing is complete. However, the use of color significantly enhances the alienating effect. Schiele's paintings resemble those of Kokoschka but also have a Cubist character.
Although Schiele was heavily influenced by the work of Gustav Klimt, the lines he used are fundamentally different in nature. While Klimt primarily depicts round, soft forms that idealize the human figure, Schiele employs powerful, angular lines. As a result, the depicted bodies are experienced as strange and often frightening by the viewer. Both women and men are ruthlessly portrayed in their nudity, in unusual, contorted poses. Nevertheless, Schiele's work was also well received in his time.
