The instrument is published on Catawiki with a full description including the defects and with many pictures. Included in the pictures is also an inspection certificate, issued in 1946 by the KNMI, the official inspection authority for these instruments in the Netherlands. The certificate explicitly calls the instrument an Octant, specifying the angle, covered on the scale of the instrument. I rely on the expertise of this official instance. I have not ignored the buyer's arguments, but I have given him my honest opinion, based on the expertise of the KNMI. 
If the matter (octant versus sextant) is of such importance to the buyer, he could have easily asked me for more information beforehand. 
The buyer announced -without my consent or proposal- to return the instrument (although I have not received the instrument as yet)

Occasionally, two different bidders may show up in the bidding history with the same bid amount. This occurs when one user's bid is exactly the same as an automatic (maximum) bid placed by another user earlier. Since the auto-bid was placed first, this takes preference. The bidding history will show both bids, with the auto-bid ranked as the higher of the two.
