Spazz

Bold, bright, colorful and clever. These words describe the unique, recognizable work by Dutch painter Spazz (Sebastian van Houwelingen). His style is difficult to categorize since it is a mixture of many styles that have been picked up along the way. It could be best described as a form of Neo-pop art with influences of expressionism, classic art styles such as Baroque and Renaissance as well as street art and cartoons, all wrapped up in a contemporary package. His works often combine old and new to give new meaning to well-known classics and/or make observations of modern society. This all being done with a healthy dose of humor. Born in 1991 in Dirksland, a small town in the Netherlands, Spazz always showed a natural drive to create images that are humoristic as well as thought-provoking. Growing up this mainly meant drawing comics about fellow students, teachers or whatever provided inspiration (sometimes selling these drawings to schoolmates, rendering him able to purchase snacks in the school cafeteria). Later in life, this drive made him decide to apply for an education at the Willem de Kooning Academy for the Arts. Spazz got accepted but only attended art school briefly. After "dropping out", he soon set out to make a career out of being a free artist. In the first stage of his career, Spazz taught classes in drawing for children and doing art projects with an organization for special-needs people, besides working on his own paintings. In 2019 the demand for his art grew to such an extent that he choose to solely focus on creating paintings full-time. To this day, Spazz remains a full-time painter, obsessed with his work (in a healthy manner). His recognition in the art world continues to grow as his paintings continue to sell worldwide.
