Ueno 上野 - Yoshitoshi Mori 森義利 (1898 - 1992) - Japón

On auction is a 63 year-old print by Yoshitoshi Mori. In later years, Mori depicted many (Kabuki) characters in a comical style. But at the start of his career his art was more sober and artful with a wider scope, focusing more on the hustle and bustle of festivals, towns and neighborhoods. These prints are often very busy, and you can spend hours observing each detail. With every viewing you will discover something new. I would compare them to the paintings of Breughel. This print "Ueno" is a very well known print from this period, and was displayed at many exhibitions. We consider ourselves very lucky to be able to offer this print in such a good condition. Yoshitoshi Mori was a Japanese artist who specialized in kappazuri stencil prints. He was for many years a member of the mingei folk craft movement, and was close with Yanagi Sōetsu, founder of the movement, and Serizawa Keisuke, among others, producing stencil-dyed textiles and other textiles arts before turning to prints later in his career. Yoshitoshi is said to have influenced several major 20th century print artists, including Shikō Munakata and Hiromitsu Takahashi. His colorful works generally depict scenes from the kabuki theatre, or subjects related to folk traditions and festivals. Art collector Ren Brown writes that Yoshitoshi's "figures are most often rendered with a simplicity that manages to denote great energy and movement. ... Mori is known for using earthy colors in his work, and for often positioning his figures in a somewhat contorted and dynamic mass." (source: Wikipedia) The print is in excellent condition. It has never been framed and always stored in a dark place. Due to the large size of this print, it will be shipped registered in a tube. This offers drastically reduced shipping costs.
