Following a successful career as a professional illustrator, Warhol gained worldwide fame for his work in painting, avant-garde film, and literature, a notoriety that was backed by a skillful relationship with the media and his role as guru of modernity. Warhol acted as a link between artists and intellectuals, but also between aristocrats, homosexuals, Hollywood celebrities, drug addicts, models, bohemians and colorful urban figures. Among his influences: Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Truman Capote, Ben Shahn, Tom of Finland or Jack Smith.
