M.C. Escher (1898-1972) - "Encounter" (1944)

Author: Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) Title: "Encounter" (1944) Size: 55 x 65cm Copyright: The M.C. Escher Company - Baarn - The Netherlands. Offset print, made on 180g matt paper. Displays a vivid and sharp image quality. Just the right size to frame. Impressive effect when framed. Shipping in a rigid tube via certified express mail. It is possible to collect more than one object, from the same auction, in the same shipment. Encounter is a linocut print in which Escher shows two rows of identical figures walking in opposite directions inside a geometric, enclosed space. In the centre, two figures shake hands: one appears alive, the other is its reverse, like a ghostly double. The work plays with symmetry, movement and paradox—recurring themes in Escher’s art. When Escher created Encounter, he was living in Baarn (the Netherlands) and had just spent several years experimenting with optical illusions. This print is one of the first where he clearly combines the idea of metamorphosis with human figures. It’s said that Escher drew inspiration from the labyrinthine corridors of some Italian towns and from the mathematician H.S.M. Coxeter’s writings, but the image of two opposite realities greeting each other also reflects his fascination with duality and “parallel worlds.”
