WWI German Military Artillery Compass made by HILDEBRAND, Freiberg/Sachsen
Compasses like these were used both on the ground and in the air by German balloon crews to determine the range and distance of targets considered for artillery fire.
The compass features a blackened brass housing with serial number 34018, a clearly readable compass rose (divisions: 6400 MILS, counterclockwise), and foldable sighting vanes, with hook shaped tips for suspended use. The mechanism to lock the magnetic needle is sadly damaged and incomplete (will be secured when shipped).
Plate/dial diameter: 60 mm - Height (sights upright): 75 mm - Ruler: 90 mm - Material: Brass, blackened
