- Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was an American painter whose meteoric rise transformed contemporary art. Emerging from New York’s underground graffiti scene under the tag SAMO, he quickly developed a highly expressive visual language that blended raw gesture, text, symbols, anatomy, Afro-Caribbean heritage, jazz, and social commentary. His style energetic, emotional, and often confrontational became one of the defining voices of Neo-Expressionism in the 1980s.

Basquiat’s artworks frequently explore themes of identity, race, inequality, and power. His signature use of bold lines, vivid colors, fragmented figures, and repeated symbols creates a sense of urgency and psychological intensity. Despite his short life, he produced an influential body of work that continues to shape contemporary art worldwide.

Today, Basquiat is one of the most sought-after artists on the global market.
