- Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was an American painter whose meteoric rise transformed contemporary art. Emerging from New York’s underground graffiti scene under the tag SAMO, he quickly developed a highly expressive visual language that blended raw gesture, text, symbols, anatomy, Afro-Caribbean heritage, jazz, and social commentary. His style energetic, emotional, and often confrontational became one of the defining voices of Neo-Expressionism in the 1980s.

Basquiat’s artworks frequently explore themes of identity, race, inequality, and power. His signature use of bold lines, vivid colors, fragmented figures, and repeated symbols creates a sense of urgency and psychological intensity. Despite his short life, he produced an influential body of work that continues to shape contemporary art worldwide.

Today, Basquiat is one of the most sought-after artists on the global market. His original paintings routinely achieve multi-million-euro results at major auction houses, with several works surpassing €50–100 million. Prints and authorized editions are also highly collectible and remain in strong demand due to his cultural impact and limited lifetime production.

Skull (1981) is one of his most iconic works. The piece depicts an expressive, fractured head part portrait, part anatomical study constructed with aggressive brushstrokes, crossed lines, and layered colors. The face appears simultaneously alive and disintegrating, capturing Basquiat’s fascination with anatomy, mortality, and inner psychological tension. The intense blacks, yellows, reds, and blues amplify the sense of chaos and emotional power. Created during one of the most celebrated years of his career, Skull embodies the raw energy and complexity that define Basquiat’s artistic legacy.
