Réplika de un antiguo romano Cornalina Intaglio - 15 mm
Replica of Ancient Roman Carnelian Intaglio – 1st century AD – Cupid Riding a Phallus – Apotropaic Gem
Beautiful and authentic Ancient Roman carnelian intaglio dating to the 1st century AD, engraved with a rare and highly evocative apotropaic scene: Cupid (Eros) riding a phallus, a powerful symbol of fertility, love, vitality, and protection in Roman culture.
The gemstone displays a rich reddish-orange hue and a well-preserved engraved surface with clear details and a dynamic composition. Such imagery was deeply symbolic and commonly used as a personal talisman or signet ring, intended to bring good fortune and ward off negative influences.
The phallus (fascinum) was among the most widespread protective symbols in the Roman world, while Cupid embodies generative love and desire. Together, they form a strong auspicious and protective image typical of Roman private devotion.
This intaglio would originally have been mounted in a ring or pendant.
Period: Roman Empire, 1st century AD
Material: Natural carnelian
Technique: Hand-engraved intaglio
Dimensions: 20 × 15 × 2 mm
Condition: Very good for its age; wear consistent with antiquity
Provenance: European private collection
Engraved gems with erotic-apotropaic imagery are increasingly sought after by international collectors due to their rarity, symbolic richness, and strong visual impact. An excellent piece for collectors of Roman glyptic art, ancient amulets, or erotic symbolism in antiquity.
