Edo period (1615-1868) Description of the Kabuto Japanese Suji Bachi Kabuto with Crescent Moon Maedate and Kuwagata Decoration Period: Edo Style: Suji bachi kabuto with eight iron plates and elaborate front crest Materials: Lacquered iron, copper, brass, leather, and cotton This kabuto is a beautiful representation of the suji bachi type, composed of eight joined iron plates with pronounced ridges. The rich brown tone and subtle aging marks give the piece an authentic, historical character. The standout feature is the maedate (front ornament), composed of: A crescent moon made of brass, a powerful symbol often associated with vision and spiritual strength, linked to figures like Date Masamune. Two kuwagata elements (beetle horn-shaped crests) finished in oxidized copper texture, rough-textured and aged, giving them a bold, archaic presence. The fukigaeshi (side wings) are gold-lacquered and boldly curved. The shikoro (neck guard) consists of five horizontal iron plates laced with dark blue cords, offering both protection and elegant composition, it may have been added later. Interior lining in navy blue quilted cotton, with traditional fastening rope still intact. Description of the Kabuto

Japanese Suji Bachi Kabuto with Crescent Moon Maedate and Kuwagata Decoration

Period: Edo

Style: Suji bachi kabuto with eight iron plates and elaborate front crest

Materials: Lacquered iron, copper, brass, leather, and cotton

This kabuto is a beautiful representation of the suji bachi type, composed of eight joined iron plates with pronounced ridges. The rich brown tone and subtle aging marks give the piece an authentic, historical character.
