Villeroy & Boch Mettlach – Model 171 – 1/2 Liter Relief Stein – ca. 1895–1910 Description Exceptional Villeroy & Boch Mettlach stoneware beer stein, Model No. 171, produced at the Mettlach works in Germany circa 1895–1910. This 1/2 liter stein is executed in the highly desirable jasperware-style blue ground with finely modeled cream-colored classical relief figures, inspired by Neoclassical and Bacchic motifs. The relief scenes are crisply molded and exceptionally well preserved, showcasing the technical mastery for which Mettlach steins are internationally renowned. The stein is fitted with its original pewter lid, featuring a sculptural shell-form thumb lift and clean hinge action. The lid interior and exterior show a consistent, untouched patina. The base bears the Villeroy & Boch / Mettlach factory mark with impressed model number 171 and capacity mark “1/2 L”, confirming authenticity.
