Chinese Export Imari Porcelain Teapot with Butterflies – Qing Dynasty – 18th Century
Elegant Chinese export porcelain teapot decorated in the vibrant Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, iron-red enamels and gilt highlights. The body is beautifully moulded with gentle lobed ribbing and finely hand-painted with butterfly and floral motifs, a popular decorative theme symbolising happiness and longevity.
The lively decoration is characteristic of Chinese export porcelain produced for the European market during the Qing Dynasty in the 18th century. Teapots of this type were made for the growing tea trade and reflect the strong cultural exchange between China and Europe during that period.
The teapot has a pleasing rounded form with curved handle and elegant spout. The original lid is still present and attached with a small chain to prevent loss. The painted decoration is executed with lively brushwork and subtle gilt details.
Condition
Good antique condition. The lid shows a visible hairline crack and an old restoration line (see photos). Minor age-related wear and small firing imperfections consistent with 18th-century porcelain production.
A charming and authentic example of Chinese export Imari porcelain, highly decorative and attractive for collectors of Asian ceramics or antique tea wares.
