Léon Zeytline (1885-1962) - Bouquet de fleurs

Vibrant post-war still life by Léon ZEYTLINE (1885–1962), titled Bouquet de fleurs, oil on panel, signed lower left and dated 1952, 60 × 50 cm. The composition presents a lush bouquet (pinks, reds, creamy whites) gathered in a deep blue vase against a dramatic dark, wine-red background—painted with confident, energetic brushwork and generous impasto that gives the petals a sculptural presence. 1) Artist & historical context: Zeytline is known for his vivid evocations of Parisian life-the Belle Époque and the Roaring Twenties-subjects that became central to his work. An exhibition dedicated to him (“Léon Zeytline, la vie parisienne”) was held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Mulhouse (2020), reflecting the renewed institutional interest in his oeuvre. According to regional cultural documentation, he settled in Paris in 1906, later moved to Alsace after his marriage in 1925, and ultimately lived in Mulhouse from 1949 until his death in 1962—a late period during which this 1952 still life was created. 2) Why this 1952 bouquet is desirable While Zeytline is celebrated for his bustling city scenes, this work shows the same painterly confidence applied to an intimate subject: • Post-war color drama: high contrast between the bouquet and the deep background • Rich impasto / expressive handling: thick, tactile paint layers that catch the light • Oil on panel: a support often appreciated for its stability and crisp paint response • Signed & dated (1952): firmly placed within the artist’s mature late period in Alsace/Mulhouse 3) Condition: Very good overall condition consistent with age.
