Caracalla (188–217 AD), Roman emperor from 211 to 217, is best known for granting Roman citizenship to all free men of the Empire by the edict of 212. The son of Septimius Severus, he had his brother Geta assassinated and ruled with an iron fist and a violent hand. He was assassinated by an officer while leading a campaign against the Parthians.
