Globo terráqueo Dietrich Reimer / Berlín - 1912

Antique terrestrial globe published in Berlin in 1912 by the renowned cartographic house Dietrich Reimer. The cartouche reads: “Dietrich Reimers, Erdglobus, herausgegeben von dem Kartogr. Institut, der Verlagshandlung von D. Reimer (E. Vohsen) Berlin, 1912.” This is an elegant table globe of impressive presence, with a diameter of approximately 33 cm and an overall height of about 58 cm, mounted on a refined brass meridian support and a turned ebonized wooden base. The cartography, printed on paper gores applied to the sphere, displays the delicate coloration typical of early 20th-century German cartographic production, with the political borders and geographical nomenclature of the period. The paper surface has developed a gentle age-related yellowing which gives the globe a warm, almost golden patina highly appreciated by collectors of antique geographic instruments. The condition is very good considering the age of the object. The paper surface shows normal signs of time, including light spotting and a couple of small cracks in the gores, typical and expected for paper globes over a century old. The brass structure and the ebonized wooden base remain solid and well preserved, contributing to the overall elegance of the piece and making it suitable both as a collectible scientific instrument and as a striking decorative object. The publishing and cartographic firm Dietrich Reimer was one of the most important scientific and geographic publishing houses in Germany during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Founded in Berlin in 1845, the company specialized in the production of atlases, scientific maps and high-quality cartographic instruments, collaborating with major geographic institutes and numerous explorers. Toward the end of the 19th century the company came under the direction of Ernst Vohsen, a publisher and entrepreneur who continued the business while maintaining the scientific prestige of the Reimer name; for this reason many works from the period bear the imprint “D. Reimer (E. Vohsen)”. Under his management the firm continued producing globes and cartographic publications intended for universities, scientific institutions and collectors.
