Escuela neerlandesa (XIX) - Ship portrait

A 19th-century marine oil painting depicting a three-masted sailing ship at sea. The style is typical of the period, often commissioned for shipowners or captains. Characteristics of the painting Subject: A warship or merchant ship under full sail, with contemporary flags and small figures of the crew clearly visible. Style: The painting bears the hallmarks of 19th-century marine painting. Similar works can be attributed to artists such as George Willem Opdenhoff (1807–1873) or Thomas Lyde Hornbrook (1807–1855), who immortalized ships of the British Royal Navy. Condition: The reticulated cracking (cracking) visible on the surface is the natural aging process of the paint layer, confirming the antique nature of the work.It can be seen on the painting that it has already been restored and it was done quite well, the signature is visible at the bottom right. The artwork is in a completely flawless gilded frame, its size without frame is 50 x 60 cm. Historical context The type of ship depicted (such as a brig or frigate) was dominant from the late 18th to the mid-19th century. Similar styles were used in paintings of famous ships of the period, such as HMS, used by James Cook. The painting can also be picked up in person in Zevenhuizen near Rotterdam. We can post it carefully packaged, in an insured, registered package.
