Descripción del vendedor
Colección de 2 mapas originales antiguos (1895) – Entornos de París, Viena, Constantinopla, Roma, Berlín y San Petersburgo – Bartholomew
Two exquisite double-page plates from the renowned "Handy Reference Atlas of the World," published circa 1895 by the prestigious John Bartholomew & Co. in Edinburgh. These are authentic chromolithographs, a sophisticated 19th-century printing technique that utilizes multiple stone plates to create rich, nuanced colors and exceptional topographical detail.
These maps capture a pivotal moment in history, showcasing the "Environs" (surroundings) of the great Imperial capitals of Europe and the East just before the dawn of the 20th century.
- Detailed metropolitan layouts of Paris (showing the fortifications and the Seine) and Vienna (highlighting the Danube and the expansion of the Austro-Hungarian capital).
- A rare four-part composition featuring:
Berlin & Potsdam: The heart of the German Empire.
St. Petersburg: The Tsarist capital on the Gulf of Finland.
Rome: The "Eternal City" with its surrounding hills.
Constantinople (Istanbul): A stunning depiction of the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn, and the strategic bridge between Europe and Asia.
Cartographer: John Bartholomew (J. Bartholomew, Edinr.)
Date: c. 1895
Technique: Original Chromolithography (not a modern reproduction).
Paper: Original cream-toned heavy paper.
Both plates are in Excellent/Very Good antique condition. Colors are Vibrant and well-preserved. Clean paper with very minimal age-toning. Original vertical center fold as issued by the publisher for the atlas. Sharp edges with no significant tears or foxing.
