Historical Context:
This bronze issue was struck at Sinope, an important Greek colony and port city on the southern coast of the Black Sea. The coinage reflects the strong influence of the Kingdom of Pontos during the era of Mithridates VI Eupator. The obverse features Perseus, a hero claimed as an ancestor by the Mithridatic dynasty, symbolizing the royal connection and military prestige of the region. The reverse displays a cornucopia—representing the maritime and agricultural wealth of the city—flanked by the pilei of the Dioskouroi (Castor and Pollux). These twin deities were traditionally invoked as protectors of mariners, a fitting motif for a city whose economy and survival depended heavily on Euxine sea trade. The presence of the stars atop the caps signifies their divine nature and role as guiding lights for sailors.
