Spadinn are long decorative silver hair pins forming part of the traditional Lombard sperada, an elaborate headdress worn in rural and ceremonial contexts. Originating in the Milan and Lake Como area, the sperada is composed of multiple pins arranged in a semicircle like rays around a hair bun, both securing the hairstyle and serving as a display of craftsmanship and social status. It also functioned as a symbol of engagement or marital status. The style was popularised in the 19th century through The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi) by Alessandro Manzoni. Hallmarks: 1. Maker’s mark “FS” in a circle with an allegorical standing figure radiating rays from the hands — the initials may be attributable to the Fratelli Sacchi workshop. 2. Woman’s head in profile — an Italian assay mark (testa di donna), indicating the piece was tested in Italy. This mark corresponds to silver of 800/1000 fineness and was in use between 1872 and 1933.
