A beautiful LUBA neck rest, D.R. Congo. It is a beautiful abstract piece.
The wooden neck rest is widely used by women to protect their hairdo. When they lie on the support with their neck, there is no weight on the hair which allows the hairdo to stay intact.
Good condition.
Carved wood headrests have a long history in Africa. Headrests were made for sleeping while protecting the sleeper’s elaborate hairstyle as well as height allows wind currents to pass through and cool the wearer from the region’s hot climates. Headrests are small, with their height being the average distance from ear to shoulder.
Among some nomadic sub-Saharan ethnic groups, not only was owning large cattle a symbol of wealth, but the wooden headrest was and often are indices of additional status and support.
The headrest can be used as a pillow and as a rest seat. It has a flatter surface to rest on, while headrests tend to have a crescent-shaped curve to support and support the neck.
Used primarily by men but also by women in some cultures, they are hand-carved and used to keep the head supported while sleeping. This ensures a pleasant and comfortable sleep.
