Aplique - Metal, Seda - Escuela de Ámsterdam

Dutch Amsterdam School Wall Sconce with Silk Shade, circa 1920s A highly atmospheric Amsterdam School wall sconce in patinated metal, retaining its expressive original presence. The backplate is made from light metal and has a wonderfully hand-worked surface, decorated with a pattern of hammered linear marks that give it a lively, almost skin-like texture. At each corner sit tightly rolled spiral ornaments, small but striking details that lend the piece a playful and slightly theatrical character. The lamp bears resemblance to the metalwork of Hendrik Methorst, particularly in the worked metal surface, and also recalls the expressive decorative vocabulary seen in lighting by Winkelman & Van der Bijl. The maker remains unknown, but the piece sits very convincingly within the Amsterdam School period. This backplate, the arched arm, the suspension and the tapering shade holder all contribute to that particular Amsterdam School tension between restraint and eccentricity. It is exactly this sort of form language that gives the movement its enduring appeal: sculptural, artisanal, a little strange in the best possible way. With the lamp lit, the shade gives off a soft, warm glow that enhances the sconce’s intimate and decorative quality. The lamp is in good condition, in working order, and uses one small bulb. Amsterdam School design is among the most distinctive expressions of Dutch Art Deco. Rooted in expressionist architecture and decorative arts, it favored handcrafted surfaces, emotional form, and a certain medieval strangeness over strict rationalism. In furniture and lighting alike, that often resulted in objects that feel dramatic and unusual. A rare and characterful accent piece, ideal for any interior that benefits from a little shadow play and sculptural mood. Condition Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. The silk looks original, fringes most probably 60s or 70s.. At some point rewired but is 1960s/70s. We left the wiring as is - it's not difficult to rewire. for otehr electric systems worldwide. Uses E14 (small) bulb at present
