Ceratomyrmex 'hell' ant in Burmese amber.
Ceratomyrmex is an extinct genus of ant, found only in Burmese amber (~99 million years old, mid-Cretaceous).
Its full name is usually given as Ceratomyrmex ellenbergeri — the only known species so far.
What makes it special:
- It had a huge, curved horn growing upward from its head.
- Its mandibles (jaws) were also very long and upward-curving.
- Scientists think the horn and jaws worked together — the ant could trap prey by pinning it between the horn and the jaws!
- This is completely unlike anything seen in modern ants.
- 7.5x22mm (ant approx. 3.5mm)
- Authentic Burmese amber, approximately 99 million years old.
- Natural warm hues with excellent clarity and polish.
- Cretaceous-era material prized by collectors worldwide.
- Ideal for jewellery or serious fossil collections.
