ABOUT THE ARTIST Luis Gordillo (Seville, Spain, 1934) is one of Spain’s most important contemporary painters, widely recognized for his innovative approach to abstraction and figuration over a career spanning more than six decades. He initially studied law before dedicating himself to painting and attending art school in Seville, later expanding his artistic horizons in Paris in the late 1950s. Gordillo’s early work engaged with informalism and Pop Art, and he evolved through diverse phases that incorporate drawing, printmaking, photography, and digital processes. His work gained international exposure with invitations to major art events, including participation in the Venice Biennale in 1970 and again in 1976, marking him as a significant figure in postwar European art. Gordillo has received numerous prestigious awards, such as the Spanish National Award for Plastic Arts (1981), Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (1996), and the Premio Velázquez de Artes Plásticas (2007), the highest honor for Ibero-American artists. His art is held in major Spanish and international collections, and he is regarded as a central influence on multiple generations of contemporary artists.
