- Roses (1890) by Vincent van Gogh is a luminous and deeply expressive still life created during the final year of the artist’s life, a period in which flowers became one of his most poetic subjects. With its delicate white blossoms, pale green background and vigorous brushwork, the composition reflects Van Gogh’s extraordinary ability to transform a simple vase of flowers into an image of emotion, vitality and spiritual intensity.

The work belongs to the same mature artistic universe as Van Gogh’s celebrated irises, sunflowers and almond blossoms, where nature becomes a vehicle for colour, movement and feeling. The textured white roses, built through energetic strokes of paint, reveal the influence of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, while also anticipating the expressive freedom later explored by Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso and Amedeo Modigliani. The painting’s soft harmony and decorative elegance make it especially appealing for admirers of floral art, botanical wall decor and refined modern interiors.

In Roses, Van Gogh combines freshness and melancholy with remarkable balance. The pale green vase and background create a serene atmosphere, while the thick impasto-style brushwork gives the flowers a living, almost sculptural presence. This emotional use of colour and texture places the work in dialogue with later masters such as Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Gustav Klimt, David Hockney, Mark Rothko and Pierre Soulages, artists who also understood colour as a powerful language of sensation and mood.

The timeless beauty of this composition makes it ideal for elegant interiors, vintage-inspired decoration, romantic spaces and contemporary homes. Its floral subject gives it broad decorative appeal, while the name Van Gogh remains one of the strongest and most searched in the art market, standing naturally alongside globally recognised artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Karl Lagasse, Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons.

Within today’s wider culture of collecting and design where fine art, vintage objects, luxury names such as Rolex, Patek Philippe and Cartier, and popular icons like Star Wars, Pokémon and Lego can coexist in curated interiors Van Gogh’s floral works retain a unique emotional authenticity. The ongoing trend for nature-inspired interiors, soft colour palettes and expressive botanical art makes Roses especially relevant for modern decorative spaces.

A refined and highly desirable image, Roses captures the essence of Van Gogh’s final creative period: intense, tender, expressive and unmistakably modern.
