Rare Two Chinese Famille Rose Four Seasons Flower Vases, Late Qing / Early Republic Period
These two rare Chinese famille rose vases date from the late Qing Dynasty or the early Republic period. The elegant square-section form is richly decorated with an abundance of flowers and foliage covering almost the entire surface. A vibrant palette of pink, green, blue, yellow, white and gilt enamels has been used to create an exceptionally colourful and decorative appearance.
The central section of each vase is decorated with four shaped reserve panels, finely painted with seasonal flowers including orchid, chrysanthemum, peony and rose, symbolising the beauty of the four seasons. The surrounding ground is densely filled with flowering plants and scrolling decoration, while the borders are highlighted with geometric key-fret patterns in underglaze blue.
The enamels are bright and well preserved, and the painting is finely executed throughout. These two vases are attractive examples of late Qing to early Republican decorative porcelain and display beautifully despite their modest cabinet size.
