The catalyst (1963): Warhol was inspired by Taylor's health crisis during the filming of Cleopatra and her personal scandals. He saw in her the perfect duality of Pop Art: a mixture of ultimate celebrity, vulnerability, and tragedy. Technique: Warhol didn't paint by hand. He used a publicity photograph of the actress and transferred it to the canvas using silkscreen printing. He flattened her image in unnatural and intense colors (like fuchsia or turquoise) to emphasize her artificiality as a product of mass culture. The series: After his first works in 1963 (like the famous Liz #5 and Silver Liz), Warhol continued producing variations of these portraits throughout 1965, cementing the actress's place in the same pantheon of myths as Marilyn Monroe or Elvis Presley.
