Jarrón - Gres - Japón - Hotarubukuro Motif - Wakabayashi Shō
Item Description
This is a Japanese studio ceramic vase from the Mashiko ware (益子焼, Mashiko-yaki) tradition, created by potter 若林聳 Wakabayashi Shō. The vase has a full, rounded body typical of Mashiko pottery, finished in a soft matte white glaze that gives the surface a gentle, tactile quality.
Around the body, hotarubukuro (bellflower, Campanula punctata) blossoms are depicted in a combination of carved relief and iron-brown underglaze painting. The white petals are rendered in raised, sculpted glaze, while the leaves and stems are painted in a warm iron-brown tone, creating a pleasing contrast against the pale background. The piece is thrown with visible horizontal throwing lines and has an organically irregular, hand-shaped silhouette rather than a perfectly symmetrical form, which is characteristic of hand-built Mashiko studio pottery.
The base bears an impressed maker's mark, and the vase comes with its original wooden storage box (tomobako), which is typically inscribed by the artist and helps confirm authenticity and provenance.
This piece would suit collectors of Japanese studio ceramics or anyone looking for a characterful ikebana vase with a naturalistic floral motif.
